Bitcoin Audional Matrix (BAM) Technical Protocol Specification

Introduction

Bitcoin Audional Matrix (BAM) is a modular, on-chain music ecosystem built on the Bitcoin blockchain. It provides a decentralized framework for music production and distribution, functioning as an entirely on-chain digital audio workstation (DAW) environment. Every aspect of content creation – from audio samples and synthesizer patches to full songs and applications – is stored and managed on Bitcoin’s ledger. This ensures that music collaboration and ownership are transparently documented in an immutable, trustless environment. BAM leverages the Bitcoin Ordinals protocol (inscriptions of arbitrary data on satoshis) to encode audio and metadata directly on Layer 1 (L1), guaranteeing permanence and security. At the same time, it is designed to accommodate Layer 2 (L2) extensions (e.g. Stacks) for enhanced scalability, cheaper storage, and future smart-contract functionality.

This document specifies the BAM protocol in detail, covering its community network model, on-chain audio encoding standards, modular data schemas, developer SDKs, end-to-end workflows, and the governance and rights management model. The goal is to enable third-party developers and creators to seamlessly integrate with BAM and ensure cross-platform compatibility for all on-chain music content.

1. Community Network and Discovery

BAM is fundamentally community-driven, enabling contributors to publish and share audio resources and applications on-chain without centralized servers. The protocol defines open roles and discovery mechanisms to organize this ecosystem:

Roles and Participants

In BAM, anyone can be a creator, remixer, or consumer of content. Creators are users who inscribe original audio assets or modules (samples, synth patches, plugin code, presets, etc.) onto Bitcoin. Remixers (or forkers) build upon existing on-chain works by referencing and combining them to create new compositions or derivative modules. Listeners/Users discover and play these on-chain audio pieces or use modules within their own projects. There are no strict permission gates – by default all inscribed content is globally accessible – but creators can specify usage intent via metadata (e.g. license) and attribution is inherently tracked (see Section 6). All participants interact on equal footing through their Bitcoin wallets; holding a given audio-inscription essentially confers ownership of that piece of content.

Publishing Content

Contributors publish audio material by inscribing it as Ordinal data on Bitcoin. This can include raw audio samples, sample libraries (collections), synthesizer definitions, audio plugin code, effect presets, even entire DAW-like applications encoded for on-chain use. To publish, a creator prepares the data (for example, encoding a WAV file to BAM’s OPUS audio JSON format, or packing a synth’s parameters into a JSON schema as defined by the protocol) and then broadcasts a Bitcoin transaction carrying that JSON as an Ordinal inscription. Once confirmed, the content becomes a permanent, addressable artifact on Bitcoin, identified by its inscription ID. Because each inscription is associated with the creator’s address (and signature if provided), provenance is automatically recorded – anyone inspecting the item can see which Bitcoin address (or BAM identity) created it, and which currently owns it.

Open Discovery and Indexing

Finding and accessing content in BAM is achieved through decentralized indexing and metadata tagging. Each inscribed JSON includes rich metadata fields (instrument type, genre, BPM, etc.) that make the content self-describing and searchable. Community-run indexers (similar to Ordinals explorers) can crawl the blockchain for BAM inscriptions and build open catalogs of content. Decentralized frontends – for example, web applications or Bitcoin wallet plugins – can query these indexers or run their own node to discover content by filters (e.g. search all drum samples tagged “808”, list all synth patches by a certain creator, etc.). Because metadata is stored on-chain in a standardized format, any compliant client can present a discovery interface. BAM encourages open metadata tagging: creators can include tags or keywords in their inscription JSON (e.g. "tags": ["drum", "analog", "C-major"] or specific fields like "genre": "HipHop") to aid discovery. This open tagging means no central authority controls how content is labeled – the community organically classifies and finds resources through the shared metadata schema.

Remixing and Forking via Deterministic Linkage

A core feature of BAM is the ability to remix or fork existing works in a deterministic, traceable way. Instead of copying source material, new creations reference the originals by on-chain links. For example, if a musician wants to reuse a guitar riff sample that’s already on-chain, they can create a new composition JSON that includes a reference (pointer) to the original sample’s inscription ID. This could be done through a JSON field such as "sources": [{"inscription": "", "part": "full"}] indicating the dependency. BAM leverages Ordinals “recursive inscriptions” capability to allow one inscription to directly include or call data from another. In practice, this means a piece of code or composition can fetch the content of referenced inscriptions when executed in a compatible client, ensuring the original audio is pulled in. The link is deterministic: using the unique inscription identifier (or a content hash), so any client will fetch the exact same referenced data. For more granular reuse, JSON Pointers (RFC 6901) may be used to point to a specific part of a JSON document – e.g. a particular layer or track within a complex composition – though typically referencing the whole inscription is sufficient for modules like samples or presets. This remix model guarantees that attribution remains intact (the original source is always cited in the new JSON), and it enables a true collaborative network. Anyone can build on anyone else’s work, forming a web of on-chain content where lineage can be traced back to the earliest creators. There are no protocol-enforced permission checks before remixing (any public inscription can be referenced), but creators can declare licensing terms via metadata (see Section 6) to guide acceptable use. In sum, BAM’s community layer turns the Bitcoin blockchain into a decentralized music library and collaboration network, where content is published openly, roles are defined by user behavior, and discovery is driven by on-chain metadata and community indexers.

2. Standardized On-Chain Audio Encoding

To efficiently store and play audio on Bitcoin L1, BAM defines a standardized encoding format for raw audio data and its metadata. The approach is to compress audio for compact storage, then wrap it in a lightweight JSON envelope for self-description and easy integration. Key aspects of the audio encoding standard include:

Audio Compression (WAV → Opus)

Raw pulse-code modulated audio (e.g. WAV files) are first encoded into Opus format before inscription. Opus is a modern, open audio codec that provides excellent quality at high compression ratios, making it ideal for on-chain use. For example, a 16-bit stereo WAV might be compressed to a 64–128 kbps Opus stream, reducing size drastically while retaining fidelity. Opus uses a fixed sample rate of 48 kHz internally, but it can represent other sample rates efficiently; BAM recommends using 48,000 Hz or 44,100 Hz sample rate audio as input for best results. The encoded binary data (the .opus file bytes) is then Base64-encoded as text. This Base64 text ensures the audio payload can be included directly in a JSON inscription (which must be valid UTF-8 text). It eliminates the need for separate binary files or external storage – a single JSON contains both the metadata and the audio content.

JSON Audio Envelope

The Base64 audio string is wrapped in a minimal JSON structure containing descriptive fields. This JSON serves as the on-chain audio file format in BAM. An example structure might look like:

Field definitions: version indicates the BAM audio schema version (for future compatibility). type distinguishes the kind of content ("audio" in this case, versus "synth", "plugin", etc., in other contexts). format specifies the codec of the embedded data (e.g. "opus" for audio content). sampleRate, channels, bitrate describe the technical properties of the audio track, aligning with the source/Opus encoding (e.g. 44100 or 48000 Hz, 1=mono or 2=stereo, target bitrate in bits per second). duration is the length of the audio clip in seconds. license is an optional field where the creator can declare a usage license (for example, CC0 for public domain, a Creative Commons license, or "Proprietary"). creatorId identifies the creator – this could be a Bitcoin address, an on-chain identity handle, or a public key hash – allowing an explicit attribution within the file. Finally, data contains the actual audio content encoded as a Base64 string (representing the binary Opus audio). The JSON is kept minimal to save space, but it is flexible to include additional metadata if needed. By embedding audio in JSON, we gain a self-contained artifact that any client can parse to obtain both the audio and all information needed to play and catalog it.

Size Limits and Segmentation

Because Bitcoin block space is precious, BAM recommends size guidelines for audio inscriptions. A typical Ordinal inscription can be up to ~4 MB (theoretically, up to the block weight limit), but inscribing multi-megabyte files is costly and may be impractical. For efficiency, audio clips should be kept small – e.g. sound samples and loops might be 100–300 KB after compression. For longer audio (full songs or lengthy stems), the content can be segmented into multiple inscriptions. BAM supports multi-inscription audio by either chaining or indexing segments:

  • Chained Segments: A large audio file can be split into sequential chunks (e.g. 1 MB each). Each chunk is inscribed as its own JSON (with fields indicating it’s part of a sequence, such as "seq": 2 and a common "groupId" or a reference to the first chunk). A player application can fetch all chunks (perhaps by following references or a naming scheme) and concatenate the audio data in order.
  • Indexed Manifest: Alternatively, one can inscribe a manifest JSON that lists multiple smaller audio inscriptions. For example, a manifest might have an array of inscription IDs or content hashes that together make up a large piece. The actual audio data could live on an L2 storage (like Stacks or an immutable off-chain storage) with the manifest on L1 referencing them. In either case, the segmentation is deterministic and declared on-chain, so any client can reassemble the full audio by following the on-chain pointers.

The protocol doesn’t enforce a hard size limit, but as guidance, keeping individual inscriptions below a few hundred kilobytes ensures faster propagation and lower fees. Creators of full-length songs may choose to leverage L2 storage or compression at lower bitrates to stay within reasonable size. BAM’s flexibility with recursion and chunking means even multi-inscription files can be treated as one logical audio asset by applications.

Attribution and Provenance

Attribution is inherently handled through Bitcoin’s cryptography and BAM’s metadata. Each audio inscription is created by a Bitcoin address (which is recorded in the blockchain and can be retrieved from the inscription’s ownership data). This provides basic provenance – one can always find which address first inscribed a given audio piece . BAM enhances this by encouraging an explicit creatorId field inside the JSON, and optionally a signature. A creator can sign the hash of the audio content (or the entire JSON minus the signature) with their private key, embedding this signature in a field like "signature". This offers verifiable proof of authorship even if the item is later transferred to another address. Additionally, when works are remixed, the referencing of the original inscription IDs (as discussed in Section 1) provides a provenance chain. An on-chain audio file can thus carry a history of ownership and usage: the inscription lineage reveals if it was derived from earlier pieces, and the Bitcoin transaction history shows transfers of the asset. This approach to provenance is decentralized and tamper-proof – inscription provenance is as immutable as the Bitcoin transactions themselves . It’s worth noting that BAM’s base protocol focuses on attribution and provenance, rather than enforcement. The metadata (creator fields, licenses, references) ensures credit is given and origin tracked, but it does not technically prevent someone from copying data. Instead, it leverages the transparency of the blockchain: anyone can verify the true source of a sample or track and honor the creator’s specified terms.

3. Module Integration Formats

Beyond raw audio files, BAM encompasses modular data formats to represent various elements of a digital audio workstation. These include synthesizer instrument definitions, audio effect plugins, preset collections, and effect chains. All such modules are described in JSON, following standardized schemas that allow different clients to interpret and use them interchangeably. This section outlines the JSON schema structure for each module type and how the protocol supports extensibility:

Synthesizer Definition (Instrument Module)

A synthesizer module in BAM is described by a JSON object capturing all parameters needed to recreate the instrument’s sound. This includes oscillator settings, envelopes, filters, modulation sources, and any other synthesis parameters. For example, a subtractive synth patch JSON might look like:

In this schema, type identifies the module type ("synth"). synthType might optionally specify a category or engine (e.g. virtual analog, FM, sampler, etc.). The JSON then contains fields like oscillators (a list of oscillator definitions, each with waveform and tuning parameters), envelope (amplitude envelope parameters), filter (filter parameters if any), LFOs (modulators), etc., depending on the synth’s design. The exact schema is defined by BAM such that common synth components have standard field names and ranges (for instance, oscillator waveform could be an enumerated string: sine, saw, square, triangle, etc.). The name field is a human-readable patch name. An empty ext object is included as a placeholder for any future or custom parameters not covered by the base schema (ensuring forward compatibility). This synth JSON does not directly include audio data; instead, it represents a sound generation recipe which, when interpreted by a client (using a sound engine), can produce audio. If the synth needs wavetables or sample data, those could be referenced by inscription ID (similar to samples) inside the synth JSON. By standardizing synth parameter schemas, BAM allows different music software to load the same synth patch and get the same sound.

Plugin Parameter Map (Audio Effect Module)

BAM also standardizes the format for audio effect plugins or processing modules (e.g. reverb, compressor, EQ). A plugin module JSON defines the type of effect and its parameter settings. For example:

Here pluginType might be a predefined category (compressor, EQ, delay, etc.) which implies certain standard parameters. The parameters object is a map of parameter names to their values. For a compressor, as in the example, we have threshold (dB), ratio, attack/release (ms), gain, etc. A reverb might have parameters like roomSize, damping, wetMix, etc. By listing parameters in a JSON map, any client’s audio engine knows how to configure that effect. The name can identify the preset (e.g. “BasicComp” preset for a compressor). The plugin’s internal algorithm could either be implemented in the client software (if it recognizes pluginType:"compressor" it uses its built-in compressor algorithm), or it could reference code if the effect is custom. BAM allows plugin code to be inscribed as well (for example, a WebAssembly module or FAUST DSP code could be an inscription). In such cases, the plugin JSON might include a reference like "code": "" and the parameters, so that a client can fetch and load the custom effect code. The ext field again permits extra data or non-standard settings for future expansion. All effect plugin JSON schemas share a common structure (type, name, parameters map, optional code reference, ext), making them interoperable.

Preset Banks

A preset bank is essentially a collection of related module presets (for synths or plugins). Instead of inscribing many individual JSONs, a creator might package multiple presets into one JSON for convenience. The preset bank JSON could be structured as:

Here moduleType indicates what kind of presets are inside (e.g. all for a synthesizer). The presets array contains multiple entries, each with a name and a data object which is basically a synth or plugin JSON (as defined above) but possibly without repeating the version/type each time (to reduce size). The idea is to allow inscribing, say, an entire soundbank in one go. A client reading this can expose a list of presets named "WarmPad", "BrightPad", etc., all derived from one inscription. This is purely for convenience and efficiency; semantically it’s equivalent to multiple separate module inscriptions. Preset banks also facilitate sharing of a themed collection (like a library of drum kit presets or a synthesizer’s factory presets) in one file.

Effect Chains and Routing

One of the powerful features of BAM is that modules can be composed into processing chains. An effect chain JSON describes how audio flows through multiple modules. For example:

In this schema, the chain field is an ordered list of module references. Each element can either be an object with an inscription ID (pointing to another BAM JSON module, like a synth or plugin) or it could inline a module definition directly. The above example references an existing synth patch inscription followed by two effect plugin inscriptions, effectively saying: take the synth’s audio output, run it through the distortion, then through the reverb. A client would resolve each inscription, load the respective modules (using their JSON definitions), and connect them in that order. This chain could itself be considered a new composite module (in this case producing a processed instrument sound). Chains can also describe parallel routings or more complex setups, though the simplest representation is a linear list. More advanced routing (like send/return, mixers, splits) might be introduced with an extended schema version, but version 1.0 focuses on linear chains for simplicity. The name field can label the chain (especially if it’s intended as a reusable preset chain). By standardizing the way chains are described, any two clients will interpret a chain JSON the same way and apply effects in the intended order.

Schema Versioning and Extensibility

All BAM module schemas include a version (for the schema format) and often an ext field or similar to allow future growth. The ext object or any unrecognized fields should be safely ignorable by clients that don't understand them, ensuring backward compatibility. For instance, if a future version 1.1 of the synth schema adds a new field (say, oscillators[i].phase for initial phase), an older client that only knows version 1.0 can ignore that field and still use the rest of the data. Likewise, if entirely new module types are introduced (e.g. "visualizer" for visual skins, or "controller" for interactive controllers), they would use type fields not defined in 1.0. Clients should handle unknown type values gracefully (perhaps warning the user or skipping those). BAM could also designate a field like "moduleType" or use a prefix in the type to indicate experimental extensions. Another method for extensibility is a custom opcode or type code: for example, if type: "ext-XYZ" is seen, it might refer to a community-defined module type outside the core spec, which can be loaded via a plugin system in the client. The protocol encourages innovation by not limiting the JSON strictly to known fields – as long as the required minimal fields are present (like version and type), additional data can travel with the module. This design allows BAM to evolve: new module categories (signal analyzers, AI-driven generators, interactive music controllers, etc.) can be introduced in a forward-compatible way. Versioned schemas and extension points ensure the ecosystem can grow without breaking existing content.

In summary, BAM’s module format standards provide a unified language (JSON schemas) for describing all building blocks of music. Synths, effects, presets, and chains all share the same philosophy of minimal, self-describing JSON. This uniformity lets different platforms interoperate – a synth patch inscribed by one person’s tool can be loaded into another’s audio software, because both understand the common schema. Developers are encouraged to adhere to these schemas or propose extensions through the open governance process, so that the on-chain music remains universally interpretable.

4. Interoperable SDKs and Frameworks

To foster broad adoption, BAM is accompanied by interoperable software development kits (SDKs) and libraries in multiple languages. These tools simplify the process of encoding/decoding BAM data, validating content, and using modules in applications. The SDKs ensure that developers – whether building web apps, mobile experiences, or desktop DAWs – can easily plug into the BAM ecosystem without reinventing the wheel. Key features of the BAM SDKs and framework:

Language-Agnostic Interfaces

The protocol defines language-neutral data structures (the JSON schemas), and multiple reference implementations are provided. For example, a JavaScript/TypeScript SDK can be used for web or Node.js projects, a Rust SDK for native and WASM contexts (which could also compile to WASM for web), and potentially Python or C++ libraries for other environments. All SDKs conform to the same logic for parsing and producing BAM-compliant JSON. Conversely, a decodeAudio(bamAudioJSON) -> AudioBuffer function will Base64-decode and then Opus-decompress a BAM audio JSON object to yield playable audio data in memory. Similar convenience functions exist for other module types: e.g. parseSynth(json) -> SynthObject could instantiate an in-memory synthesizer representation (or at least a data model) from a JSON string, and serializeSynth(SynthObject) -> json does the reverse. These utilities abstract away the low-level details so that developers interact with familiar constructs (audio buffers, parameter objects) rather than manually dealing with Base64 or binary codec interfaces.

Data Validation

The SDKs also include schema validation for BAM content. Before an inscription JSON is accepted or used, the library can validate that it conforms to the expected schema (all required fields present, types are correct, values in allowed ranges, etc.). This might be implemented via JSON Schema definitions or custom validators. This helps catch errors or malformed data (important since on-chain data is immutable – you want to get it right before inscribing). It also protects applications from trying to process invalid data. Developers can use these validation routines during content creation (to ensure their new module will be compatible) and when loading data from the blockchain (to safely handle or reject unexpected input).

In this pseudo-workflow, loadSample/loadSynth/loadPlugin are provided to fetch a module by its on-chain ID (the SDK might internally call a blockchain API or use a local index). The returned objects could be high-level representations or even actual audio nodes if in a Web Audio context. Then createInstrument(synth) might return a playable synthesizer instance configured with that patch. The code shows connecting modules: the synth into the plugin, then into an output. Finally a note is played and audio is rendered/heard. Actual implementations will vary (for example, in a DAW context, one might integrate with an audio callback or an offline renderer). For instance, if a plugin has threshold, ratio, attack, release parameters, the library might supply default ranges (e.g. threshold in dB range -60 to 0) and even a basic slider component that can bind to those. Comprehensive documentation accompanies the SDKs, with examples for common tasks (e.g. how to take an MP3 from your computer and inscribe it as a BAM audio file, or how to fetch a synth patch and play a melody with it). By prioritizing developer experience, BAM hopes to catalyze a rich ecosystem of third-party tools, remix platforms, and even full-fledged DAWs that support the protocol.

In practice, these SDKs and frameworks act as the glue between the on-chain data and the user experience. They hide the blockchain intricacies behind familiar abstractions (files, instruments, sound processors), thereby accelerating adoption. As the BAM community grows, these libraries will be iteratively improved and kept in sync with protocol updates, ensuring that any changes in data format or new module types are supported with minimal friction for developers.

5. Ecosystem Cohesion and Workflows

BAM is more than just a file format or a single application – it is a holistic ecosystem encompassing on-chain data, standards, tools, and user workflows. This section ties together the components of BAM and illustrates how they interact in real-world use cases. The BAM stack can be visualized in layers:

  • On-Chain Data Layer (Bitcoin L1): At the base is the Bitcoin blockchain, where all BAM content lives as Ordinal inscriptions. Audio files, module definitions, and compositions are recorded here as immutable data. In BAM, when a creator inscribes a piece of content (be it an audio sample, a synth patch, or a full song composition), that inscription is a non-fungible digital artifact on Bitcoin. Control of the UTXO holding that inscription equates to ownership of the content. Thus, whoever holds the private key to that UTXO is considered the owner of the audio data and by extension the rights to use it. This model mirrors NFT ownership semantics but on Bitcoin – the difference is that the actual content is on-chain, not just a pointer to off-chain media. Ownership can be transferred by sending the inscription to another address, just like transferring a rare token. BAM assumes that the act of inscribing is an assertion of authorship and initial ownership, and subsequent transfers reflect changes in who holds the rights (much like selling a painting). This simple model does away with complex rights management infrastructure: the blockchain’s records are the source of truth of who “owns” a given sound or module at any time . If a sample used in a song is inscribed by Alice and Alice still holds it in her wallet, she is the rightful owner; if she sells it to Bob, Bob becomes the new owner (and perhaps the one who could license it further, etc.).

Attribution and Immutability of Credits

While ownership is tied to UTXOs, attribution (credit to original creators) is permanently baked into the content itself. BAM deliberately does not enforce royalties or automated payments at the base protocol level. The philosophy is that Bitcoin’s base layer should remain a simple record of ownership and data. Thus, if someone uses a sample you created in their song, the protocol does not automatically send you any payment or enforce a fee. This is similar to how NFTs on Bitcoin (and many on Ethereum now) work – once you sell an NFT, you have no on-chain enforced royalty. Acknowledging the importance of existing rights management and potential future smart contracts, BAM includes optional fields to integrate with external systems:

  • License Declarations: As mentioned, a license field can specify the usage license. This doesn’t enforce anything technically but signals the creator’s intent. For instance, a sample might say "license": "CC-BY-NC" (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial), meaning anyone can use it non-commercially if they credit the creator.   • Smart Contract Extensions on L2s: The BAM architecture is open to being extended by Layer-2 solutions on Bitcoin that support smart contracts or more complex logic. For example, Stacks (an L2 that enables smart contracts with Clarity) or RGB (a smart contract and asset layer for Bitcoin) could be leveraged to create royalty-enforcing mechanisms or micro-licensing systems. The transparent usage tracking that BAM enables (every time a sample is used in a new inscription, it’s visible) could lead to new platforms that pay out based on usage stats (for example, a DAO that collects funds and distributes them to sample creators proportional to on-chain remixes, as a form of community royalty). By making all this data public, BAM levels the playing field – no hidden uses, and no need for complex auditing to see who used a sound. The hope is that over time, this can influence the wider music industry toward more fairness, as hinted by Audionals: “accurate and transparent royalty tracking and distribution” becomes possible even if not enforced, and even small contributions can be recognized.
